Breaking! XFR “Sport Break” Confirmed!
Hot on the heals of yesterday’s update that Jaguar is still on track to produce an XF Sport Wagon is
this ringer: 5.0 liter supercharged V8 included. Jaguar Chief designer
Ian Callum admitted in an interview with the Dutch publication Autovisie
that a 510 horsepower version of their “Sport Break” would be produced.
Jaguar’s unique name for this forthcoming estate reveals certain design
intentions: a five-door sedan-based wagon that aims to be as stylish
and sleek as a typical 3-door English shooting break. Callum, formerly
of Aston Martin, admitted that an “estate was not originally on the
agenda,” and thus the design will be based on the sedan. Callum also
noted that due to this design consideration, there won’t be a large
amount of luggage space, but aesthetics will be the main concern.
Expect
the 2013 XFR Sport Break to weigh in at a portly 4,400 lbs, but offer a
sprint to sixty in 4.8 seconds. The AJ-V8 will benefit from the same
roots-type twin-vortex supercharger, cooled by twin intercoolers, and
offering a healthy 461 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy (no one who buys
this estate will give these horrendous numbers a second glance) should
figure in at about 15 city and 20 highway, or perhaps slightly better if
the Sport Break benefits from a 7 or 8-speed transmission. Top speed
is a limited 155, with potential for a de-governed terminal velocity of
over 200 (especially with minor aerodynamic upgrades like the XFR Sedan
which hit 225 at Bonneville last year)! Look for this fast cat to be
near the top of our Fastest Wagons list come 2013.
