SWGreen: 875-bhp Bio-Powered Ferrari FF


The Ferrari FF is a revolutionary shooting brake. As the first four-wheel drive, four seat Ferrari, the FF had to overcome its birth as a pariah (to the tastes of Ferrari purists). But with its 651bhp V12 that revs to a stratospheric 8,000 rpms, most critics were quickly won over. To make the FF even more potent, several aftermarket tuners have advocated differing performance strategies. There’s the typical stage one tune with a revised exhaust, an intake, and an ECU flash. For even more power, many tuners (like Novitec Rosso) add forced induction in the form of twin superchargers. Yet, the FF has emissions befitting a twelve-cylinder engine, and these tuning schemes only exacerbate its carbon footprint. Enter the rarely seen and “green” performance tune: Bio-ethanol engine conversions.



Norweigan firm Customized.no offers this ethanol conversion for the new Ferrari FF. And the price is right too. For under $3,000, FF owners can install (or in all likelihood, pay to have installed) the full conversion kit. And don’t worry, it doesn’t require the installation of an LPG tank. Best of all, it appears that Ferrari is open to working with Bio-ethanol tuners, as a Ferrari dealership actually performed one of the first conversions.



By running E85 ethanol—85% ethanol and 15% gasoline—the modified FF produces an additional power output of 23%. That means the E85 FF yields a serious 875-bhp. Like the Koenigsegg CCXR (which produces 21% more power on ethanol—1,020 hp), the E85-powered FF gains power due to the higher octane content (between 100 and 113) and the cooling principles of ethanol (a cooler intake charge). With its revolutionary four wheel drive system (which weighs 50% less than conventional systems), a bio-fueled FF can surpass sixty miles per hour in under 3 seconds. Like the 950-bhp Essing Dieseltuning RS6 Avant, this FF can hang with a Bugatti Veyron. With a stock top speed of 208, we’d expect this 875-bhp Ferrari to easily eclipse 215 mph. Easily one of the world’s fastest wagons.



Aside from prodigious power gains, running bio-ethanol through the FF’s converted V12 results in 80% less carbon emissions than the stock model—an ever-present concern with the Euro 5 emissions standards. Of course, there are well-documented environmental problems with ethanol, so this solution is only “green” insofar as the cars direct emissions (rather than the total carbon footprint from growing, transporting, and refining ethanol). And for all the hype about extra power and lower emissions, converted gasoline engines require more ethanol than gasoline for traveling the same distance—the E85-powered FF gets worse fuel economy. We’d also be interested to see how the V12 holds up over time with ethanol, as E85 can deteriorate certain internal engine components. Bio-ethanol conversions certainly offer improved performance, but there’s always a downside.



The jury is still out on performance ethanol conversions—not just for the FF—but we’re always happy to see eco-conscious tuners trying to increase performance from their wagons.

Ferrari 456T Wagon

           Ferrari 456T  "Speciale Venice" Wagon 


We have a deep respect for the Sultan of Brunei for his love of Sport Wagons, his very deep pocket book, and most importantly in this immediate case, his passion for converting very fast coupes and sedans to wagons. In this case, it was actually his brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, who commissioned this insanely-brilliant creation.

Perhaps jealous of his younger brother's (the Sultan of Brunei) AMG-built Pagani-powered Mercedes S-Class wagon, the Prince commissioned Pininfarina to build 7 estates based on the Ferrari 456 (he only purchased 6). These photos show one of the Prince’s exceptionally rare Ferrari wagons, each of which are rumored to have cost around $1.5 million. Each of these custom five-door coach builds are known as a Ferrari 456 Speciale “Venice.” 

 Just like the coupe, this 456 has a 5.5L V12 producing 436hp. One wagon certainly has  the 4-speed automatic from the 456 GTA, but others may have the 6-speed manual from the GT. Either way, the estate puts all four-hundred and thirty-six rampaging Italian stallions to the pavement through the rear wheels. 

When it was first unveiled, the standard 456 coupe could reach 188 mph, making it the world's fastest production four-seater. Thus, the 456 wagon was almost certainly among the fastest five-doors on the planet in the mid-1950s, sharing rarefied atmosphere with the likes of the Brabus E V12T.

Ferrambo: Ferrari-Powered Rambler Wagon
Before the new Ferrari FF Shooting Break there was only a handful of coach-built Ferrari Wagons: The legendary 250 GTO “Breadvan” and several 456T “Venice” estates. But what about Ferrari-powered wagons? This is where the fun really begins, and where the flawless formula of (Classic car + giant modern engine= WIN) comes into play. The classic here is a 1960 Nash Rambler Wagon. A venerable member of the 50’s wagon generation, the Rambler is an excellent candidate for Ferrari power with its 2-door configuration and rear-wheel drive. Add in a 3.6L V8 from the 360 Modena and this wagon means serious business.
 
Built by madman Mike Warn (you’ve always got a job at our “institution”), the Ferrambo won Autorama’s 2008 Ridler Award- an award given for impressive creativity and craftsmanship. With top notch engineering, an insanely beautiful interior, and all the proper bits and pieces, the Ferrambo certainly lives up to the award. Like all custom wagons, this devil is truly in the details. Warn and his team mounted the Modena-sourced V8 amidships with a custom roll-cage, ensuring superior handling and creating an ultra-rare mid-engined wagon. The Ferrambo sends 405 Italian stallions to the rear axle (also sourced from the donor 360) via a 6-speed manual with the classic Ferrari shift-gate. The Rambler’s rear windows even crack open 5 degrees to ensure the V8 doesn’t overheat. For superior grip and control, the Ferrambo’s wheels are wrapped in wide Pirelli P Zero rubber, and stopping power comes from the 360’s excellent rotors and calipers. True to its heart, the wagon was then painted in Ferrari Corsa Red and adorned with numerous authentic Ferrari emblems (although the final wagon sadly didn’t get the 360’s stock alloys).  
 
The Ferrambo is ultimately one of those once-in-a decade projects that comes along and makes friends with everyone. In place of its original engine, this Rambler even comes with a hood-storage compartment that stores custom leather Ferrari luggage- just like a production Prancing Horse. Because of the exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship, the Ferrambo was recently up for sale for a staggering $500,000. While we’re not sure who purchased this beast (and for how much), what’s certain is that there is a very happy wagon enthusiast enjoying this beautiful creation.
